9 days Vilanculos, Tofo
The Highlights of Mozambique holiday itinerary is designed to give you a fantastic introduction to two stunning beach destinations. Immerse yourselves in the vibrant local culture, take to the underwater world or just soak up the sunshine and Indian ocean vibes from two luxury locations.
Start by arriving at Vilanculos, in addition to being a gateway to the five islands which form the Bazaruto Archipelago, Vilanculos is a place of charming people, colourful markets and vibrant cafés and bars. Exotic, sun-baked beaches stretch on forever, the pristine landscape is a superb horse-riding destination, "swimming" the horses is a memorable experience for riders of all levels. Turquoise oceans mirror heated azure skies and flow over a rugged shoreline.
Your next destination is Inhambane, more specifically the famous area of Tofu and Barra. Inhambane is a typical Mozambican sun destination, with a colourful past and a laid-back beach holiday vibe. The museum, mosque, market and cathedral are interesting places to visit or mingle with the friendly locals. Cafés and bars offer a taste of fresh seafood, washed down with signature local beer.
Tofo and Barra are considered one of the best areas in the world to view giant whale sharks and manta rays in their natural habitat. This area is also renowned for superb fishing and excellent diving.
AsDunas is a small, owner run lodge which is located just 20 minutes north of Vilanculos. The lodge consists of two cottage suites and six safari tented suites that are hidden away in thick coastal vegetation, this beach escape offers the perfect balance between safari-style and relaxed beach charm and all rooms have magnificent sea views from their private decks
You are staying for four nights in a safari tent and included are all meals, soft drinks, beer, wine and a selection of available spirits, one daily spa treatment of massage, dune sundowner, WIFI and laundry
Mediterranean-inspired cuisine (served with delicious Italian wine), a practically deserted beach and the fact that the rooms all have private plunge pools, all add to the appeal of asDunas, which perfect for couples, honeymoon guests or a small group of friends.
You have three full days to relax and soak up this stunning location.
Vilanculos is considered the gateway to the alluring Bazaruto Archipelago and day trips can be easily organized from this area. For those looking to experience some true Mozambique culture head into Vilanculos town itself. Bright, vibrant culture and colours await you as you head to the markets and meet the people.
From asDunas you can learn the art of pasta making from the Italian owners, have a relaxing massage treatment or swim in the waters in front of the lodge (tide dependent). Optional boating, diving, snorkelling, fishing and horse-riding can be arranged from the lodge.
All activities can be pre-booked ahead of time or through your accommodation on arrival. With so much on offer we advise you chat with your Africa Specialist beforehand to see what activities will best suit you and get these organised.
This morning you begin the next part of your adventure! After breakfast, you leave Vilanculos behind you as you head south. You drive for roughly 4 hours along the coast towards the port town of Inhambane.
Your next accommodation is situated perfectly between the small towns of Tofu and Barra, this is the gorgeous Sava Dunes Lodge.
Perched on top of a sand dune in a remote part of the rugged coastline, between Barra and Tofo is the five-bedroom eco-lodge, Sava Dunes. It commands expansive views of the beach and the ocean as well as offering a tranquil beach retreat experience, with a raw, close-to-nature appeal. Five chalets have double/twin beds with mosquito netting, open-plan bathrooms (no partitions) and solar-heated showers with sea views. Each chalet has a private deck featuring a hammock and swinging chair and the beach is only a few metres away.
Rooms connect to the main lodge via a wooden walkway that winds through coastal vegetation, arriving at a bar and dining area and an outdoor poolside lounge and deck with a pool and swim-up bar. The menu skilfully combines in-season local produce and traditional seafood.
You have three full days to explore the beautiful underwater world or Tofo.
The main activities in this area centre around the underwater world. With Tofo being a world famous destination for viewing giant whale sharks and manta rays in their natural habitat. Not only this but dolphins are prolific and seasonally humpback whales pass by often giving you a show! For those who like to snorkel seahorses are a great sighting in the estuary!
For those looking to stay active above the water head out body-boarding, surfing, or enjoy a beach day with dune-top sundowners. Big game fishing is also popular in this area and is strictly catch and release. If you’re looking for some culture Inhambane offers a lot of colourful history from Mozambiques past. And Tofo is a popular diving and surfing destination for anyone looking for some nightlife this area has a little going on.
Every day can be organized as you please, if you just want some down time enjoy the hammock on your deck or take a dip to the swim up bar.
