Sava Dunes is enviably located on a remote part of the Inhambane coast in Mozambique and enjoys spectacular views of the coastline. Five ocean facing suites are elegantly perched on the vegetation covered sand dunes, and each suite offers unsurpassed views of the beach, ocean and endless horizon.
You can hear the waves from the comfort of your bed - don't be surprised to wake up to the sound of rolling breakers crashing onto the beach!
Wooden walkways join the main lodge area to each of the suites, and one main walkway meanders over the dunes and down to the beach. Enjoy morning walks on the beach, explore tropical seas during the heat of the day and relax in the lodge swimming pool in the evening. There's even a great swim-up bar in the main part of the lodge - also with sea views!
Glide through the pool, grab your Pina Coloda and enjoy your beautiful surroundings.
In season, whales regularly visit the shores in front of the lodge, and you can even hear them from your balcony. Sava Dunes is a luxurious eco-friendly lodge in a quiet and remote area. Marine safaris, ocean activities and shopping trips to the local markets can all be arranged from the lodge.
The location is quite a bit north of the small village of Tofo (roughly 5.5 km ) and close to the south of Barra beach (1.5 km). The surrounding area is world-renowned for its ocean safaris - the perfect place for the ocean lover.
Wooden walkways lead to five lovely cottages which literally catch the ocean breeze and the scent of the sea. If one is looking for a negative it's the bathroom. With a solar heated shower, double vanity and loo the bathrooms are small and open to the bedroom. Furnishings, most of which are made locally, include mosquito net, pedestal fan, sofa, dressing table, hanging space, safe and plug points for charging phones and cameras.
Being solar powered there is no hair dryer or in-room mini bar. Early morning tea & coffee is delivered to the cottages. Sliding glass doors lead out onto a wooden deck kitted out with hammock, swing chair, table and chairs, day bed and an outdoor shower.
The main area of the lodge houses the bar and dining area and is connected to each of the rooms via a winding wooden walkway that cuts through sparse coastal vegetation carpeting the undulating dunes.
The beach is a few metres from your doorstep and offers warm waters with a peeling surfable wave. There is a shoal of seahorses in the neighbouring estuary, a place that is ideal for snorkelling. When you’re done with a day of water-based activities, return to the lodge’s outdoor lounge and deck area, gently float in the swimming pool towards the swim-up bar and order a tropical cocktail.
Dinner is a 3-course affair with a choice of 2 main courses. Every meal tends to be simply delicious and beautifully presented, especially dinner which was served at a candle lit table next to the pool. The talented local chef really will exceed your expectations.
Long beach walks, dune sundowners and body boarding. Kayaks will be available from July. We recommend additional activities such as; snorkelling, scuba diving and ocean safaris are booked with Liquid Adventures in Tofo. Estuary trips to see a shoal of sea horses, horse riding and a trip to a local market can easily be arranged.
We love the eco-friendly aspects that Sava Dunes pushes through every part of their operation. This property strives to be an entirely eco-lodge, being completely powered by solar is just the start.
Borehole water is used to supply the lodge allowing it to be completely off-grid. Your morning eggs are collected from chickens on the property! Enjoy the farm-to-table, utilising the on-site vegetable patch.
If this isn’t enough, join in one of the regular beach clean ups that Sava Dunes organises.
