&Beyond Benguerra is a tropical paradise tucked into a lush indigenous forest and looking out onto a picturesque crescent of sandy beach, this is the quintessential luxury island retreat. Set among swaying palm trees, ten casinhas and two cabanas offer a light and airy colour scheme that combines tropical chic with a distinct African feel and reminders of the area’s Portuguese heritage.

Situated off the coast of Mozambique within the protected marine reserve of the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, this island hideaway is set on a protected lagoon. Warm waters, pristine coral reefs teeming with marine life, idyllic beaches, inland freshwater lakes and towering sand dunes have shaped this adventure haven.

The welcoming guest areas offer views of the lush tropical garden and the ocean beyond. Under the shade of straw covered wooden awnings, inviting comfortable loungers are set up around the lodge’s rim flow swimming pool. A colourfully decorated traditional wooden dhow has been converted into a picturesque beach bar, while the cool surrounds of the massage sala hold the promise of deep relaxation.

The lodge has a range of luxurious thatched accommodation. For families or small groups, the exclusive-use Casa Familia is an ideal option with three ensuite bedrooms, a large deck area and private pool overlooking the beach. Set amidst lush island forest, there are two cosy cabanas, ideal for couples or honeymooners, and the slightly larger 10 casinhas. Cabanas and casinhas all offer private timber decks, rim-flow pools, sun loungers and private salas with irresistible hanging daybeds.

The west facing dhow bar offers some fantastic sunsets for your idyllic barefoot beach break. Awake to the sounds of fishermen trading their daily catch from their traditional sailing dhows and embark on a series of adventures that includes horse riding dhow cruises, diving, snorkeling and exhilarating catch-and-release deep-sea fishing.

The Property

The lodge is situated on the western coast of Benguerra Island, overlooking its own beautiful palm-fringed bay about a kilometre down the beach from Azura. One of the most attractive features is that the lodge was built next to the last remaining tract of forest on the island, which gives it an abundance of greenery that the other lodges on the island lack.

There are 2 room types - the 10 Casinhas and 2 Cabanas – as well as a large and luxurious 3 bedroomed villa named Casa de Familia. The 2 Cabanas are the smallest of the rooms – having said that they still come with their own plunge pool/Jacuzzi on a private deck overlooking the beach, as well as an outdoor shower. It’s the gorgeous Casinhas that best encapsulate the unique blend of beach lodge and colonial Portuguese-era style. The rooms boast lovely timber and thatch roofs, colonial-style clay tiled floors and exhibit a restrained and elegant decor style - it's definitely more old-style luxury. A highlight is the stunning decks, complete with a relaxing sala day-bed area and gorgeous private plunge pools! You could quite happily spend all day just chilling on your wonderfully inviting deck.

The rooms have some of the finest beach views of any of the lodges in the area – open the folding shuttered windows and the doors and you enjoy wonderful views over your private deck with plunge pool to the beach and sea beyond. Down on the beach is your own thatched shady sala where you can relax with a book or enjoy the timeless sight of local fishing dhows tacking past the lodge on the trade winds. From there you are faced with the tricky choice as to whether to refresh yourself in the sea or your private plunge pool (there is also a main lodge pool often used for training divers).

Dining

Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style with a great selection of fresh produce and offered at a relaxed pace to fit in with your day. Dinner is served to your table which are often set up around the grounds offering something different every night. All meals are based around seafood so this isn’t preferable you must let us know in advance.

Activities

Scheduled snorkelling tours, dhow cruise and island drives are all included for your stay. Some great tours are additional cost such as; castaway picnics, scuba diving, horse riding safaris, fishing, helicopter sightseeing, swimming with horses, dugong conservation and massages all make for a fantastic stay!

Why Wayfairer

&Beyond’s Ocean without borders initiative is critical in supporting the conservation of the rare dugong population found in these waters.

Fishing nets and community fishing have been identified as the single greatest threat to the dugong. Working in conjunction with Africa Foundation (&Beyond’s community development partner) and the island’s local community, the Benguerra conservation team have embarked on a strategy to establish alternative food sources and livelihoods to reduce the community’s dependency on the ocean’s resources. Vegetable gardens have already been planted to solve some of these issues, and the teams are actively researching alternative protein sources for the island’s inhabitants.
