Laos is a great choice for intrepid families who are looking for an adventurous, off-the-beaten-track holiday.

From staying in remote jungle lodges and meeting Hmong hill tribe families to swimming in Kuang Si Waterfalls, spending a day at the Mekong Elephant Camp, discovering the sacred Pak Ou Caves and exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luang Prabang on a cycling tour, there are endless exciting activities that you can include on a Laos family holiday.

We recommend visiting Done Daeng Island in the middle of the Mekong River in southern Laos. Here you can stay at La Folie Lodge which is a family-friendly property with a lovely swimming pool and amazing views of the Mekong River and the Wat Phou mountains. The lodge provides complimentary bicycles (children bicycles are also available) so you can explore the island and get an insight into rural Mekong life.

At the elephant camp your family can trek through the surrounding forest over paths connecting different villages and you’ll be offered the chance to guide elephants along the paths, take them down to the river, bathe them, feed them and learn basic mahout techniques.
